Greetings by the Regent ad interim His Excellency Bo Theutenberg, KGCHS, Member of the Grand Magisterium, at the

Investiture 11 February 2017 in the Catholic Cathedral of Stockholm

Your Eminence Edwin Frederick Cardinal O’Brien,Your Excellencies the Bishops of Stockholm and Copenhagen, Reverend Monsignores, Reverend Fathers, Ladies and Gentlemen, dear Friends.

My name is Bo Theutenberg, I am Regent ad interim of the Lieutenancy of Sweden and Denmark of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a papal order consisting of some 30 000 members around the world, out of which we Swedes and Danes are only a small part. The Grand Master of this Papal Order is His Eminence Cardinal Edwin Frederick O’Brien, who is present here today to celebrate the Investiture of seven new members of our Order.

I am proud to welcome His Eminence to Stockholm and to our Investiture. It is really a great honour for us that the Grand Master of our Order himself is present together with us to perform the celebration and the Mass following the Investiture. One again,Your Eminence, very welcome to us. As we also greet our Grand Prior Bishop Anders Arborelius OCD and the Bishop of Copenhagen, H E Czeslaw Kozon as all other priests and guests in the Cathedral today.

When seeing the sword being used in the ceremony please note what is said by the Cardinal when investing the new members: “Be on guard never to use it to strike anyone unjustly”.“Bear well in mind that the Saints have conquered kingdoms not by the sword, but by faith”.The sword is nowadays only a symbol for our loyalty to the Church, to Jerusalem and to the Holy land.

HOMILY OF

HIS EMINENCE EDWIN FREDRICK CARDINAL O’BRIEN

GRAND MASTER OF THE OESSH INVESTITURE OF NEW KNIGHTS AND LADIES

LIEUTENANCY OF SWEDEN- DENMARK

St. Eric Cathedral, Stockholm 11 February 2017

Friends, we gather here with much joy and thanksgiving to receive 3 Knights, 2 Dames and 2 members of the clergy as new members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

We congratulate them as we acknowledge our Regent (ad interim), and valuable member of the Grand Magisterium, Ambassador Bo Theutenberg, thanking him for his considerable efforts in bringing the events of this Investiture weekend to fruition.

Of course, I also acknowledge the presence of our Prior, Bishop Anders Arborelius and I thank him for hosting us to his Cathedral of St.Eric, and I also recognize the presence of Bishop Czeslaw Kozon, Bishop of Copenhagen, Denmark. I greet His Excellency Enric Mas, the Lieutenant from España Orientale (Eastern Spain) who has come to be with your Lieutenancy to celebrate this Investiture. I welcome representatives of the Knights of Malta. I also greet His Excellency Ingemar Eliasson, the Chancellor of the Royal Orders of Knighthood of Sweden, and all the members of the Royal Orders who are represented here today.

As a result of what we do during this liturgical celebration, this vibrant Lieutenancy of Sweden & Denmark will be further strengthened, our worldwide Order enriched, and the Mother Church of our Catholic Faith, Jerusalem, will be assured of increased prayer and support.

As the Church Universal today, February 11, has recalled the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes to St. Bernadette, we call upon Mary, our Heavenly Mother, as we work to serve up our earthly mother, the Church, by our love and support for the people of the Holy Land and for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

7

Jerusalem… Jerusalem…

In our special relationship to Jerusalem, we members of the Holy Sepulchre are offered a special relationship to Jesus. What love Jesus had for his city. Consider that Gospel picture that we are all familiar with. For the last time, Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem, his city. The palm fronds celebrating his ecstatic welcome still line the hillside road and for a solitary, poignant moment he stops: “If only you had known, if only you had known…the time, this time of your visitation.” And he weeps.

Like every faithful Jew, Jesus loved that Holy City and though he as yet could not bring into view the beloved Temple in the distance, he stirred with emotion. Its beauty, its history, its symbolism – for his Father had chosen Jerusalem as His city and loved its very stones. He loved Jerusalem as His Father did – the Father who, century after century sent prophets whose warnings fell on deaf ears. Now, his patience has run out – yes, even God’s patience can be exhausted – and the Father sends a final prophet, his Son, his only Son. And Jesus weeps!

On an earlier visit to Jerusalem, we hear Jesus’ lament even more poignantly: Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing (Lk.

13:34) And he weeps!

What love Jesus had for His City. And how shortsighted would we be were we not to realize that he still loves Jerusalem with all that same human tenderness – yes with that same pathos that was his when he wept over it! He had walked that land, taught in its temple and synagogues, poured out his heart and all his energies to heal illness, to preach peace and offer hope to those poorest and most hopeless kindred of his. And does he not weep for them still?

Surely, His love continues today for the people in his city – people he still considers his own.And does not his continuing love for his land today yearn to bring relief and comfort to the tens of thousands who still suffer there?

And may I suggest to you members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre that it is this Christ’s very love for his land that today breathes grace into our hearts to love those people passionately, whom he loves, and is it not his grace from heaven that should prompt us to weep, if only figuratively, over his City and his Father’s Chosen Land, when we become aware of the persecutions and denial of human rights, hatreds, plottings, betrayals and even killings that beg a civilized world’s response? But how little response there continues to be!

Brothers and Sisters of our Order, dig deep into your heart’s imagination to see, to realize that it is Jesus who inspires and encourages our mission today. And the symbols – as important and central as they are to today’s

8

ceremony and to our identity, the mantle, the spurs and the sword – lay them aside, mentally, if only for a moment – and ask the Lord to help us experience His divine grace: to encourage in us – new members and old – a deeper personal holiness and a renewed commitment to his Land and his People.

One sure, tried-and-true path to renewing such a commitment, as many of you have and will continue to experience, is a periodic pilgrimage to that Land: to visit, encourage, and express solidarity with our courageous Christian brothers and sisters. To pray at the shrines that stand in the very soil where the mysteries of Christ’s life are memorialized, shrines still brimming with graces: in Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and surely, at the Holy Sepulchre itself.

In September, my secretary Father Bateman and I were in Jerusalem for the Installation of Archbishop Pizzaballa and on separate mornings we had the privilege of offering Mass – first at the site of the Crucifixion and then on the very altar of his Resurrection – moments long to be remembered.

But that privilege brought freshly to my mind the mystery of the Eucharist

– this Eucharist we are celebrating together, for example. Listen to what St. John Paul II suggests:

“This sacrifice (of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus) is so decisive for the salvation of the human race that Jesus Christ offered it and returned to the Father only after he had left us a means of sharing in it as if we had been present there.”

Think of it – as singular and privileged was our standing upon, touching the very soil of Christ’s physical Crucifixion and Resurrection at the Holy Sepulchre, even more spiritually profound is our unity with Christ in his Sacramental Death and Resurrection at each Eucharist, joyfully and reverently celebrated!

As we offer the Mass on this day we are entering God’s world, a sacramental world which abolishes time and space and draws us into the very action of the Death and Resurrection of Christ – as if, (says the Pope) we had been there as it took place. And for us who are uniquely dedicated to that place, the Holy Sepulchre, may this Mass serve as a sacramental pilgrimage to Calvary. As we make this Eucharistic pilgrimage, let there be no doubt that the Christ who then wept over Jerusalem is pleased, indeed takes joy in what we do to keep his presence alive in that City and Land which He loves.

Amen.

Speech by the Regent ad interim His Excellency Bo Theutenberg, KGCHS, Member of the Grand Magisterium,

at the dinner 11 February 2017 in Honour of the Grand Master His Eminence Edwin Frederick Cardinal O’Brien.

Your Eminence,Your Excellencies, dear Bishops and Reverend Monsignores and Priests, Members of the Order, newly invested members, Receivers of the Cross of Honour.

Warmly welcome to this dinner in Honour of our Grand Master His Eminence Edwin Frederick Cardinal O’Brien. I greet the Cardinal and his Assistant Father John Bateman flying in from Rome for this occasion. I greet His Excellency Anders Arborelius OCD, the Bishop of Stockholm and His Excellency Czeslaw Kozon, the Bishop of Copenhagen. Here I may remind about of the fact that earlier during autumn 2016 the Grand Master created the new joint Lieutenancy of Sweden and Denmark, for which we are very happy.

I greet especially the Chancellor of the Royal Swedish Orders of Knighthood (KMO) Ingemar Eliasson and his wife Karin, the Vice Chancellor of the Royal Orders professor Staffan Rosén and his wife Valentina and Mr Tom Bergroth of the Royal Orders. It is a real honour to have them with us here today.

I greet our guest Her Excellency the Ambassador of Croatia Mrs Anica Djamic as well as His Excellency Erico Mas Lopez, Lieutenant of the Lieutenancy of Spain. We are also glad to welcome my former colleagues from the Swedish Foreign Ministry Their Excellenies Fredrik Wahlquist, former ambassador to the Holy See and Robert Rydberg, the Swedish ambassador to the Republic of Italy.

Of course I greet all members of our Swedish-Danish Lieutenancy present here, in particular the newly invested Knights, Priests and Dames. In total we invested seven persons as new members today.

Our Order and our Lieutenancy is of course also very much depended on support from good people outside the formal framework of the Order and the Lieutenancy. In countries like Sweden and Denmark we need and appreciate all kinds of sincere and truthful support to our Lieutenancy, be it donations or other kind of support.

I therefore greet the persons that yesterday and today have received the Crosses of Honour from the hands of his Eminence the Grand Master.

18

Also at the lunch yesterday given by the Royal Orders of Knighthood at the Royal Castle the Grandmaster bestowed Crosses of Honour in order to commemorate this remarkable event that took place yesterday through the visit of the Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre to the Royal Orders of Knighthood of the Kingdom of Sweden. This was for sure a unique and remarkable event that will be remembered in the annales of our Order.

The ongoing tragedy in the Holy Land and in the Middle East in general puts an enormous strain on the Christian parishes, its members and priests and especially on the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, through which the Order of the Holy Sepulchre is canalizing its substantial economic support to the Christian population – in order for them to be able to stay there.

It was in 1847 that Pope Pius IX restored the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which function had vanished at the end of the 13th century. At the same time the Pope gave the Order of the Holy Sepulchre the specific task to support the Patriarch’s work for the maintenance and advancement of Christianity in the Holy Land. That is still our Mission today. The Order comprises today 66 Lieutenancies and so called Magistral Delegations with some 30 000 Knights and Dames spread over 40 countries. Among the last created bodies are Brasil-Rio de Janerio, the Czech Republic, Croatia, the Philippines and Taiwan.

By their activities they collect several millions of dollars being sent to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem to cover the costs for all its activities to foster a better and more peaceful future in the Holy land. The more Lieutenancies and Magistral Delegations that are created with many more paying members the capacity of the Order to assist and help will expand. This is really needed under present circumstances.

It is the empty tomb of Christ in Jerusalem – the Holy Sepulchre, which witnessed the resurrection of Christ – that for centuries has been in the centre of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. It is Jerusalem – the soil of Christ – which is still the centre of the Order. All members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre give their solemn vows to support the maintenance of Christ’s tomb, as also the Christian presence in the Holy Land.

We are however not the first Swedes/Danes that have been invested as knights and ladies of this illustrious Order, which legally is a part of the Catholic Church and the Holy See. We know that the Swedish saint, Saint Bridget, and her son Birger Ulfsson, made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1372, where Birger Ulfsson was invested as a knight on the Holy Sepulchre itself. During the medieval times also other Swedes and Danes, as well as Norwegians, were invested in Jerusalem – in connection with their pilgrimages to Jerusalem.

19

We cannot think about Christ without also thinking about Jerusalem, the city where he was present in the Temple, and where he was crucified and buried. Jerusalem is the centre of the Christian faith. Christians have ever been present there. But nowadays this presence is drastically cut because Christians cannot see any future for themselves in this city and in the Holy land, where they once – and not so long ago – even was a majority.

If we do not do much more – also in economic terms – to support the Christians in the Holy land,“Christians” will diminish – even vanish – and the “sites of Christ” transform into historical memories and museums.

Having said this it is however important to emphasise that the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre – as it looks today – sees it as vital to foster friendship and dialogue with our brothers of the Islamic and Jewish faiths. Because of this the Catholic Order of the Holy Sepulchre has an important role to play in the establishment of understanding and peace between the peoples of the Holy land, now living under unbelievable severe conditions. Our hearts are bleeding for the victims of violence in the Holy land.

Dear friends, all wonderful things come to an end. This is actually my last performance as Regent ad interim of the joint Swedish-Danish Lieutenancy which, as I said earlier, was created a few months ago – on 26 October 2016

– by His Eminence the Grand Master. I have kept the post as Regent ad interim for exactly one year and later on tonight I will relinquish the post at the same moment as His Eminence hands over the Decree of appointment to the new Lieutenant of this Lieutenancy of Sweden and Denmark. Therefore I thank you all for the year that has passed and I bring you all my warmest thanks for your cooperation during the year I have led this Lieutenancy.

Again, very welcome to our dinner in honour of our Grand Master.

Your Excellency, the Chancellor of the Royal Orders of Knighthood Ingemar Eliasson

Thank you very much for your words of welcome and for the impressive reception in the Royal Castle of me and my Party. I thank you particularly for officially greeting me in the Chancery of the Royal Orders of Knight- hood of the kingdom of Sweden, a most impressing surrounding I must say. The glorious reputation of the Royal Order of the Seraphim, a heavenly creature, is well known and of which you are the proud Custodian. As well as of the other Royal Orders the symbols of which I am looking forward to be able to see in a few moments.

I am very glad to be received officially as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem here in Stockholm today. This is kind of a historic meeting. Such a meeting has never happened before. It must not be the last one.You are very welcome to come to Rome and meet me there. I see my visit here today as a manifestation of goodwill and

23

friendship between our Catholic Order and the Royal Orders of Knight- hood of Sweden. I believe it is important with this kind of visual demon- stration of friendship and cooperation between organizations and bodies sharing the common will of achieving something good in the fields where we are active, be it in the Kingdom of Sweden or in Rome and in the Holy land. It is in the Holy land my Chivalric order is active. Our historic roots go far away back into the history. We are the knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, that is to say the knights of the empty tomb from which our Lord Jesus Christ resurrected from his Death and which then became the eternal symbol of the Resurrection of Christ which we cherish every day in our prayers.

But apart from this wonderful moment when Christ stood up from Death and thereby changed the whole history of mankind, our Chivalric Order has for centuries received instructions and directives from our Holy Father to serve as the main structural body for the upholding of the Christian presence in the Holy land. And to see to it that there are economic means to support the Christians of the Holy Land. This is done through the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. This is, I must say, a very difficult task these days. But with our 30 000 members spread over the World, divided into some 60 Lieutenancies and Magistral Delegations we make real efforts to come to the help of the Christians in the Holy land. In many ways.

24

An important component in our world organization is the Swedish Lieu- tenancy of our Order which was established in 2003, that is to say soon fifteen years ago. This Lieutenancy is working here in the Kingdom of Swe- den. Quite recently I issued, however, a Decree putting Sweden and Den- mark together as one Lieutenancy. I am sure that with the close and friendly relations that nowadays exist between Sweden and Denmark – and also between the Royal families of Denmark and Sweden – we are embarking upon a new Avenue in our help to the Holy land. By uniting our efforts in Sweden and Denmark we hope to raise more members and more money to work for the good of the Holy land, where the problems today are monu- mental. With such a demanding background the friendship and cooperation between the Lieutenancy of Sweden – Denmark and the Royal Orders of Knighthood is more than welcome. That we may meet now and then and exchange views on how to solve rising problems always coming up for the legitimate Orders of Chivalry, which nowadays are challenged more and more by self-made bodies trying to interfere into the bona fide good work done by our true orders of Chivalry. We have also, in that field, common interests to work for.

Your Excellency, dear Chancellor of the Royal Orders, I thank you once again for receiving me and my delegation here in the Stockholm Royal Castle.

Chivalry – an important institution in our culture

Davor Zovko KGCHS

Orders and titles fulfill a very important function in modern society. More so, orders and titles are today more important and more necessary than ever before! Well, such a categorical statement needs to be comprehensively explained.

It is easy to interpret titles, orders and medals as an expression of vanity. But one needs to think a little deeper, in order to reach the real symbolic value of Orders and titles today.

In our modern society, there is almost no person for whom the word ”Knight” would be unknown. Moreso, it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a child in preschool age who is not capable of giving a rather good definition of a Knight. The word is not only known, but we find it often in everyday communication, in very different situations. This word usually evokes a feeling of admiration.

The reason of this is the fact the Chivalry is a part of our culture, part of our cultural identity. We’ll find Knights in different works of art: novels, dramas, movies, pictures, sculptures. Places and cities associated with Knights and Chivalric Orders are often visited by many tourists, driven by different motives. Movies with Knights as the main theme are produced regularly and they always fill cinemas very well. The Knight’s adventure ”Ivanhoe” has become an indispensable Christmas tradition on Swedish television. Novels as well as scientific books about Chivalry are always bestsellers. Knights are well-represented even within the toy industry. There are always either cloaks, shields and swords that children can carry on themselves, or small figures and castles in different materials and designs. There are always television or computer games about Knights, available in toy stores. The well-known toy manufacturer Lego has regularly had Knights among their product lines, since the ’70s.

Knights and chivalric orders are often of crucial importance in descriptions and analyzes of important historical events. Knights and Chivalric ideals inspire individuals, organizations and movements of different interests and orientations. Knights have also inspired science fiction. A good illustration of that are the “Jedi-Knights” from the famous movie series Star Wars, which has become a worldwide mega-success.

Daily meetings with this phenomenon reminds us about the well- known Chivalric ideals. Chivalric ideals are an important part of what we

27

call implicit knowledge, knowledge that we possess but which we are not aware of until we – in some situation – might need. Chivalric ideals are an indispensable part in learning good manners. Thanks to Chivalric ideals and our good (implicit) knowledge of them, we describe many situations in life with Chivalry as a metaphor. We often hear, for example, that someone has acted “as a Knight” in a given situation. Directly, without knowing anything about the actual person or the actual situation, we can rather accurately guess how this person has acted. Similarly, we easily understand the metaphors as: Knights of morality, Knights of fair economy, drug-free Knights, Knights of justice, Knights of free speech, etc.

The Real Chivalry existing today

But the knights and the Chivalric ideals are not only reliquiae of history in our culture. The real Chivalry still exists in following forms:

  1. Official reward system in many states and countries. Almost all sta- tes of the world reward their own and foreign citizens who have made meritorious contributions.Virtually all European countries – among them even Sweden – have their own official reward system consisting of knightly orders.
  2. Military Chivalric orders within the Christian Churches.Within the Roman Catholic Church as well as in some Lutheran churches, real Chival- ric Orders, instituted in the Middle Ages, still exist today. Knighthood has thus survived in its original form in these Christian churches.
  3. Knight as a title of nobility is a hereditary title that is ranked directly under the title of Baron (Friherre in Sweden). In general, even these titles were bestowed through Chivalric Orders. The official name of Swedish As- sociation of Nobility is “Swedich Chivalry and Nobility”.

Only orders awarded by the sovereign, recognized states, governments and regents, are real Orders of Chivalry.Real Orders are governmental institutions regulated within the domain of Public Law. Numerous associations that by their own initiative call themselves ”Orders” and “Knights” are not real Orders of Chivalry. They are only private associations regulated within domain of Private Law and created simply thanks to the citizens’ freedom of association. Such compounds we can, consider more like an organized form of praising the chivalric ideals. Real Orders of Knights have no secret operations, secret meetings or any other kind of secret rituals. Secret rituals occur only in so-called fraternal organizations, which also may be inspired by the ideals of Chivalry.

Chivalry plays an important role today

What are then the two important roles that Chivalric Orders play in the modern society?

28

Real Chivalric titles are always bestowed by sovereign states, always for the purpose of awarding outstanding merits. Persons awarded with Orders are persons who have made great meritorious deeds for people in need, for their country or for human society in general. Orders are awarded solely by the responsible Authority’s own initiative. The rewarded person usually does not know anything about the Authority’s intention to award them. Still less do the rewarded people think about rewards and Orders, when they – often throughout the whole life and with a great passion – complete their life work or the task that is later awarded. A good illustration are prominent sportsmen and women. In 2007, the renowned Croatian athlete Blanka Vlasic was awarded an Order in Croatia. It is impossible to believe that Blanka thought about rewards and orders, when she so passionately practiced her favorite sport, and when she won so many fine medals at international competitions.

The same rule applies to all persons awarded with orders: they are always driven by the passion for their work, not by some romantic dream of Knights and even less by the ambition to get some titles. The greatest joy of a genuine altruist comes from knowing that his/her efforts have helped someone or have contributed to a better society. And that is the first function of Orders: they are a visible proof that the awarded person’s efforts really have made a difference, really have brought benefits to the needy or to the society. Thus, the Orders’first function is to confirm to the awarded person that his or her long-lasting good work really has resulted in something good.

Orderss´ second function in the modern society is to be an important signal to the whole society, that shows that long-lasting dedication to good work still is appreciated. Today, many old values are being rejected and replaced by some new values, values of doubtful values: money that is “earned” quickly and without hard work, quick and superficial “popularity”, or similar “ideals”. Media noise around us sometimes creates the impression that it is only money and popularity that we need in our lives, that they will make us happy and that they must be achieved immediately and at all costs. Without deeper reflection, young people participate in the meaningless TV shows where they often only do different kinds of futilities and nonsense. The only thing they get is a few minutes in front of TV cameras. In some cases, even mature persons are tempted to act in a way that they normally

would not.The only thing they get is easily earned money.

Therefore, the Orders and the titles are today more important than ever: they also provide a popularity. But this popularity is given to people who work in silence, usually for many decades, people who are not impressed by the quick profits and easy-won minutes in the media but rather by doing something good for other people. Not infrequently these persons make great sacrifices for other people’s sake. These persons really have acted in

29

accordance with the teachings of Jesus who said that one should first care about the heavenly and that everything else will be given (Matthew 6:33). Today, when young generations need to learn to look critically at all the messages coming from the media noise, it is more important than ever to show them that the old values like compassion, generosity, solidarity, selflessness, caring for one’s neighbor and unconditional love, still exist and still are esteemed!

Thus, the Chivalric titles and Orders should be worn with unbridled pride and even extra visible. Wasn’t it said that a lamp should not be lit and then hidden under a bowl, but instead held high so that everybody can see the light (Matthew 5:15; Luke 11:33)? By wearing the Orders and titles with pride we should inspire others, especially the young, to devote their life to caring for other human beings, an attitude so needed in our modern society.

Ordensbön för Heliga Gravens riddare och damer

Anders Arborelius OCD

Sorg och glädje går in i vartannat.
